Presentation abstract: The use cases of CERN for archival of time-based large partitioned data sets in Oracle will be discussed with examples. A review of the advanced compression technology with some internals will be presented. Results of in-house tests using different compression levels, including 11gR2 hybrid columnar compression, will be discussed.

Speaker biography: Luca Canali is a Senior DBA for CERN in Geneva with 10 years of experience using Oracle databases and products across various industries, including research, telecoms and finance. Since 2005 the speaker has been working at the startup and support operations of the database services for physics at CERN, based on Oracle RAC 10g and ASM on Linux using commodity hardware. Luca's recent presentations include talks at the UKOUG annual conferences in 2008 and 2007 and a talk at the UKOUG RAC SIG meeting in 2006.
